This is an exploratory interactive tour combined with a powerful database filled with hundreds of years of historical documents, artifacts, and archaeological discoveries including a 3D model of Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello
David's first job at Second Story was to prototype the mapping engine for this site. He ended up creating much of the Flash application including the plantation map, the 3D house controller, and the search functionality.
The map consists of a zoomable high resolution map overlayed with vector outlines of the plantation features. These features are drawn at runtime in the Flash player using data sent from the server in the form of a data-only swf. Technologies used include Zoomify, Flash, MySQL, PHP, and an open-source mapping tool called OGR.
